What is the difference between CBD Oil and a CBD Tincture?
Surely you’ve seen CBD products in the little brown bottles – some are labeled as “Tincture” and others are labeled as “oil”. So, what’s the difference between CBD Oil and a CBD Tincture? The growth in popularity of CBD has it being offered in many ways, stages and grades. The variations on CBD products that are made available on the market can be hard to keep up with.  The two terms are often used interchangeably, depending on where you are and what you’re looking for. That has been known to cause some confusion as both products are sold in brown bottles with dropper tops. Both products are also enjoyed sublingually.

What’s the difference between CBD Oil and a CBD Tincture? The difference is in the makeup.

A tincture is something that is made by soaking all of the organic matter inside of an alcohol and water solution. Over a matter of weeks (or more) the natural compounds of the plant will soak into the alcohol solution. Some area bars and nightclubs use this idea when soaking fruit inside alcohol as a base for “infusion cocktails.” Once the weeks, or months, of time have passed, and the solution remaining has reached a desired level, the liquid is strained through filters (to separate it from the plant pulp left behind) and bottled. Oils, on the other hand, are made by blending the desired extracted compounds into a carrier oil like MCT or hemp seed oil.  [Read about MCT Oil, here] Depending on where you’re located will determine what type of plant matter is used in your resulting oil or tincture. In states where Marijuana is legal, tinctures and oils that are available could have been made with either marijuana or hemp. They can be called cannabis tinctures, CBD tinctures with THC, Marijuana tinctures, and more.  A CBD product that can be available in states where marijuana is not legal is derived from hemp. This is because hemp is an agricultural commodity under Federal law thanks to the Hemp Farming Act. Hemp-derived CBD products (like oils and tinctures) are available for purchase and to be ordered to all 50 states. When beginning your CBD search, a good amount of due diligence should be done. This is especially true if one is wanting to begin consuming CBD while avoiding THC. It is going to be important to review the labels of the products and to purchase from a reputable seller. A company who is licensed and transparent with their certificates of analysis will be a better choice than one who can’t supply this information.  [View our latest testing results] A benefit to choosing an oil versus a traditional, alcohol-based tincture is having the ability to easily use it in multiple ways. An oil will blend well in a smoothie or a food item like dressings. An oil also won’t have an alcohol base, which can be unpleasant and undesired by those who are looking for more wellness properties. Another benefit to an oil is, in the manufacturing process, it used an extracted compound versus soaking the whole plant. When soaking the entire plant, every compound (CBD, THC and Terpenes) are in the end result. When creating a CBD oil, isolated CBD can be the compound of choice that is blended in. This is great news for those looking to avoid THC.  At Medterra, all of our products are made using isolated CBD. This means that we have been able to extract just the CBD from the hemp plant and blend it into an easy, digestible MCT oil. These oils are available for purchase in all 50 states and will never have THC - guaranteed.
