What Is CBG & Is It Better Than CBD? CBG Explained
When you’re buying CBD, you likely have to choose between isolate, broad-spectrum, immune-boosting, sleep support, morning wellness, and CBD + CBG. CBG has been making waves as the latest go-to cannabinoid on the block.  CBG, or cannabigerol, interacts with the same receptors in the body as CBD and may have anti-inflammatory effects based on early research. But, what exactly is CBG? Here’s what you need to know before trying at home.

What Is CBG?

CBG, also called cannabigerol, is known as ‘The Mother of all Cannabinoids’ as it is the parent to CBD, CBC, and THC. But, it’s not a predominant cannabinoid as it is not found in large quantities within the hemp plant itself.  As the CEO and Co-Founder of Medterra, I like to refer to CBG as “One of the cannabinoids generating the most excitement amongst researchers today.” The discovery of CBG dates back to the 1960s. Due to the prohibition on cannabis, it is still being studied for potential benefits. Based on research, early signs show CBG may be used to support our body’s fight against a variety of conditions related to chronic illness, aging, and autoimmune conditions. At Medterra, using our newest extraction technology, we created a specialized 1:1 blend that combines strong amounts of both CBG and CBD to improve effectiveness and results.  And it works! Customers have used it to help to support a night of more restful sleep as well as improvement in other conditions related to well-being. And have raved about the benefits of using CBG.

Does CBG Get You High?

CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. Meaning, no CBG does not get you high. Since CBG is the parent to THC, the intoxicating, euphoric effects typically found in THC have not developed in CBG.  However, CBG does have therapeutic effects as it is a neuroprotectant. A study conducted by the International Journal of Molecular Sciences discovered that CBG reduced inflammation and oxidative stress.

CBD vs. CBG: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between CBD and CBG is that CBG creates CBD and other cannabinoids.  As the cannabis plant begins to develop, CBGA, the acidic form of CBG, is transformed by plant enzymes into three cannabinoid precursors: THCA, CBDA, and CBCA.  The leftover amounts of CBGA that were not converted into the three cannabinoid precursors above, constructs CBG. That being said, because of this process, there is a very small amount of CBG in cannabis strains, typically below 1% in weight. This presents a problem for cultivators as they have to experiment with genetic manipulation, cross-breeding, times of extraction, etc.  That’s why it can be difficult to find CBG. As researchers start to understand CBG more and plant breeders continue experimenting, CBG should be more readily available.   However, both have many shared benefits. For instance, both CBD and CBG have no psychoactive effects. They both offer therapeutic benefits (relieve pain, reduce inflammation, etc.) And, they both have minimal to no side effects.

How to Use CBG

To use CBG, we recommend taking one serving size of 30 - 1 ml serving in the morning or night. Although, some users choose to take a half serving in the morning and night.  Start slowly by working with what’s best for you and your body, then adjust as needed.  When choosing a CBG product, at Medterra, we offer a Citrus flavored CBG + CBD Tincture at 1000mg (500mg CBD + 500mg CBG) and 2000mg (1000mg CBD + 1000mg CBG).  Both are offered in a one-ounce bottle with a dropper applicator with measurement markers for accuracy.  If you’re not sure you want to try CBG, then opt for a Broad Spectrum CBD. At Medterra, we provide Broad Spectrum Cannabinoid tinctures that contain a natural cannabinoid profile without the THC, like CBN, CBC, CBDV, and natural terpenes. Therefore, it also includes natural quantities of CBG. Before you buy CBG products, make sure you research to find if the product has been tested by a third party. And, read the lab report. For example, here is a lab report from Green Scientific Labs on our CBG + CBD Tincture And, as always, before using CBG (or any cannabinoid products), please check with your healthcare provider to make sure it fits into your health and well-being regimen.

What Are The Side Effects of Using CBG?

Currently, there are very few known side effects. However, research on CBG is still in its infancy. But, previous studies show promise. As more research and clinical studies occur, there will be more indications of the benefits and side effects of CBG.

CBG Is the New Cannabinoid

Bottom line? There may still be some uncertainty around CBG. But, CBG is incredibly powerful. CBG is the future. As the “Mother of All Cannabinoids,” it holds more promise than other molecules. Worldwide studies continue to reveal more data into the exact benefits of CBG every day.  As CBG becomes more mainstream, consider integrating it into your daily routine to see what positive benefits it could have for you. CBG can be enjoyed throughout the day to help you feel relaxed and refreshed.
