EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT CBD. WHY IS IT SO POPULAR?

Ever since hemp became an agricultural commodity, hemp-derived CBD extracts are flooding the market. It can often feel as though everyone is involved in CBD and the products made with it. What is it? How is it made? How is it used?  Take a moment to enjoy this complete guide to CBD Oil from the industry leaders at Medterra.

WHAT IS CBD?

“CBD” is the acronym for Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of the over 100 phytocannabinoids (ph-eye-toh-can-ah-bin-oids) in the cannabis sativa genus of plants. A cannabinoid (can-ah-bin-oid) is one of the many diverse chemical compounds that acts on cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid (end-oh-can-ah-bin-oid) system. Both hemp and Marijuana are part of the cannabis sativa genus of plants. That means that both hemp and marijuana have cannabinoids.  Confusion often happens because Hemp and Marijuana (Cannabis) look similar when they grow. This is because they’re in the same family of plant species. They are not similar in their genetic construction, though. Hemp contains a lot of CBD, but it does not have enough THC in it to give you a psychotropic result or make you “feel high”. When the Hemp Farming Act was enacted in 2018, hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances and it was officially declared an agricultural commodity. As a recognized agricultural commodity, Hemp is now farmed throughout the country and its natural compounds are able to be used and consumed throughout the country.  At Medterra, our CBD is extracted from hemp grown and harvested in Kentucky - right here in the U.S.A.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

As stated, CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids in the hemp plant. It is one of the many diverse chemical compounds that acts on cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a biological system that is composed of neurons, neural pathways, and receptors CB1 and CB2 of the nervous system.  [Read more about the Endocannabinoid system, here] Many studies have shown that the cannabinoids act as neuromodulators for many processes in the body. These can include motor learning and appetite or physical sensation. There are still many studies being conducted on what CBD can do for those who choose to consume it, but the word we hear back from our customers tells us all we need to know. HOW IS CBD OIL MADE?

Because hemp is a cousin plant to marijuana (as discussed above), hemp also has the same predominant compounds: CBD, Terpenes and THC. Terpenes are other CBD’s that bring a sense of “flavoring” or “note” to the resulting product. THC is the most talked about compound in hemp and marijuana. Levels of THC in hemp are naturally very low at .3%, rendering the resulting extract as “non psychoactive” or “non psychotropic”. This is the CBD product that isn’t going to leave you with a “high” feeling.  The trio of compounds that can be extracted from hemp after harvest will produce several options in “types” or “spectrums” of CBD products. You will see this described on product labels with the terms: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum or CBD Isolate. Full Spectrum CBD products or CBD oils have all compounds found in the hemp plant. The product will contain CBD, Terpenes and the .3% THC. Broad Spectrum products have no THC but will still contain Terpenes with the CBD. CBD Isolate products are those who have just the isolated CBD and nothing more. No THC or terpenes. This can be especially useful to know for those who are fearful that their CBD consumption may cause them to potentially test positive on a pre-employment screening. [Shop our Isolated CBD products]  Once the hemp is harvested, the CBD is pulled using a C02 based process. C02 extraction is a procedure that uses pressurized carbon dioxide to pull the desired CBD phytocannabinoid from the plant that it grew in. This method is among the safest methods for compound extraction, ensuring that our isolated CBD has been retrieved with the end user in mind. Once isolated and extracted from the hemp harvest, CBD looks more like a crystalline powder - like ground sugar. We combine this CBD with MCT oil to create our sought-after tinctures. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride. Medium Chain Triglycerides are a type of saturated fatty acid. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a fat-soluble compound so it is most effective, and diffused for absorption, when coupled with a lipid like a fatty acid. By choosing to use a quality carrier oil like a coconut MCT, we are ensuring the safest partner for our recognized, hemp-derived CBD isolate. This means that you are getting an optimal blend when you order from Medterra. [Read more about MCT oil and CBD, here] When reading the labels of our popular CBD isolate tincture oils, there are three differences in CBD strength that we offer: 500mg, 1000mg, and 3000mg. You will find this number on the front of your Medterra CBD tincture bottle label. Each tincture bottle contains 1 fluid ounce (30 milliliters) of hemp-derived, high quality CBD tincture oil. HOW DO WE USE IT?

CBD Oil Tinctures are usually enjoyed sublingually. This means that you will use the dropper in the bottle to choose the desired amount. This is the optimal way to enjoy CBD oil. By putting CBD oil under your tongue, and holding it there for 60 seconds, the mucus membranes in the mouth can absorb the oil’s active ingredients quickly and easily.  The benefit of consuming CBD oil sublingually is that the absorption process bypasses the digestive system and liver metabolization, allowing the compounds to get to the endocannabinoid system most efficiently.  For those who may not like this form of consumption, some have been known to put their CBD oil into their morning coffee, smoothie, or blend it into a side of salad dressing. This will require the product to be digested and go through the process before reaching levels of absorption. That may also affect how one feels the product is working, as the digestion process can break down compounds before they’re able to be completely absorbed.
